Google developing micro-payment system for online news
Google is planning to roll out a new micropayment system that it says can be used by newspapers looking to charge readers to access online content, according to a New York Times blog post.
According to Google, the proposed system of micropayments, which is still in the planning stage, will be based on the idea of allowing "viable payments of a penny to several dollars by aggregating purchases across merchants and over time."
The company is planning to roll out the system within the next year. The revelation was made in a document that Google sent to the Newspaper Association of America in response to a request for paid-content proposals that the association sent to several technology companies.
Ten other companies including Microsoft and IBM have also proposed their own mechanisms.
