Print and online journalists from select countries in the developing world can apply for the 2010 Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, an annual fellowship that brings journalists to American newsrooms. Deadline: August 1.

These fellowships, given in honor of Daniel Pearl, are open to Muslim journalists from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE and Yemen.

Among the goals of the fellowship are to:

• provide the Fellow with experience in reporting, writing and editing that will enhance future professional performance;
• enable the Fellow to gain a practical understanding of the function and significance of the free press in American society;
• transfer knowledge gained on the program to colleagues at home; and
  
• foster continuing ties between free press institutions and journalists in the United States and their counterparts in other countries.

The Fellowship covers all costs of program-related international and domestic travel, health insurance and provides a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses.

Applicants must have at least three years' professional experience, current full-time employment as a journalist, be between 25 and 35 and have a good level of spoken and written English.
