October is a month for pumpkin spice lattes and horror films – but it’s also full of new contests, fellowships and scholarships for journalists globally to apply to. Check out our list of opportunities with deadlines next month: 

Journalism contest

Deadline: October 1, 2023

Journalism organizations and journalists are invited to nominate reporters for the Fetisov Journalism Awards, which recognizes media professionals for their contribution to the promotion of universal human values and extraordinary heroism. Entries must have been published between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. 

Artificial intelligence fellowship 

Deadline: October 1, 2023

Training for Good is seeking early-career journalists for the Tarbell Fellowship. Fellows will receive a nine-month placement at a major newsroom, stipends of up to US$50,000 and mentorship. They also will participate in a study group covering AI governance and technical fundamentals.

Climate journalism course

Deadline: October 2, 2023 

Journalists can apply now for the Oxford Climate Journalism Network’s free online course, which will help participants expand their coverage of climate change. The course will provide reporters with individual support in identifying relevant sources, sessions with world-leading experts and more. 

Journalism fellowship

Deadline: October 6, 2023

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law invites print and broadcast journalists covering politics, the economy, legal and constitutional topics to apply for its MPIL Journalist in Residence Fellowship 2024. Fellows will receive a research grant of up to EUR3,500.

Video contest

Deadline: October 7, 2023

Filmmakers and activists can submit videos that inspire activism, compassion and social transformation to the Social Impact Media Awards. Films must have been completed between October 2022 and September 2023. Non-English-language documentaries and educational impact videos must be subtitled in English. Winners will receive cash prizes, media features and distribution opportunities. 

Short film festival 

Deadline: October 10, 2023

The Knowmad Institut and the North Luzon Cinema Guild are accepting entries for the third edition of the Knowmad Short Film Festival. Films must be made after March 2020, be no more than seven minutes long and have not been posted on any platform prior to their festival screening.

Scholarships for leadership program

Deadline: October 15, 2023

Underrepresented news leaders are eligible to apply for scholarships to attend the Columbia Journalism School’s 2024 Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program, which trains news leaders to lead innovation and solve strategic business challenges. The Google News Initiative is offering four scholarships that will cover tuition and travel costs. 

Environmental film festival 

Deadline: October 17, 2023
Cinema Verde, an environmental film and arts festival, is seeking film submissions. Filmmakers and students who have created films that spotlight environmental issues can enter their work to be featured at this festival. Entry fees vary according to categories and range from US$30 to US$65.
