Reporting on Trauma

In 2013 my first affect of trauma in journalism, was during my one year Industrial Attachment (intern) with a media organisation. I was to gather information about the unending street children in Lagos.

I had no idea of what to expect. I was just excited and didnt think about the psycholgical effect of writing a report about runaway and street children. I had issues sleeping for day after the story. That was four year ago, Some few months back, i still did another report on the same issue and Porters in Lagos (http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/carrying-burden-money-world-alabarus/).

Listening to women shed tears, while they tell you their stories. The pain, regret and agony about their life and why they are into such business somehow never left me.

When working on this kinds of stories, it is always an uphill battle for me. I get broken down and shred to pieces by reporting on trauma.
