Newly released AP Stylebook clarifies social media use

The 2010 AP Stylebook is now available with significant changes to its digital and social media contents.

Changes include preferred use of "website" rather than "Web site," appearance of "smart phone" as two words and the use of a hyphen in "e-reader." The changes also confirm the use of fan, friend and follow as both as nouns and verbs.

The AP has also defined a number of acronyms that are commonly used in texting and instant messaging. New terms include "trending," "retweet" and "unfriend" and "defriend."

The book also makes recommendations as to how social media should be used by journalists with a focus on the continued importance of confirming sources and information found on blogs, tweets and other social media.
