New tax proposed to improve broadcasting in South Africa

South Africa is proposing a new 1 percent tax to boost its national broadcaster the South African Broadcasting Corporation, according to Reuters Africa.

The new tax could double earnings, which were ZAR 822 million (US$109 million) in 2007 to 2008, all from license revenues.

Critics maintain that the new bill would cause a burden on taxpayers, who already faced a 45 percent increase in electricity costs this year.
